The one at beautiful days is done by http://www.talatonparishcouncil.co.uk/Core/Talaton-TC/Pages/Village_Shop_1.aspx and presumably will have been a good fund-raiser for them, I'm not sure how common this type of operation is around the country, but there might be a similar operation near some sites, might be worth looking into. *The showers were capable of hot, high flow operation. I had a superb one on monday morning. But when all were in use (queue at breakfast time) they sometimes fell to a drizzle. Possibly a supply pressure issue rather than the showers themselves.
*I found that both times I used them I had barely a trickle of water to wash with. It was a good temperature but no pressure. Liked the booths. --Pinski1 (talk) 07:33, 10 August 2016 (BST)
* By far the best showers I've ever come across at a festival. Keep it up :) chebe

Toilets
* These were significantly better than chemical portaloos. Urinals were not great though; lots of splashback and leaks; quite a puddle in the entrance of the ones on the NE towards the end. Could have done with better lighting and the grid steps weren't ideal. (The best event toilets I've used were at shambala and done by thunderboxes2go - wooden stalls with leds and flowers and very attentive to cleaning, straw bale urinals, no wheely bin management as they use big sealable tanks instead - they also have accessible compost loos).
** Seconded regarding the urinal construction, and the lighting at the northern toilets was not great - I had to raise this with staff on Friday as there was none at all Thursday night.
Sthen (talk) 17:12, 9 August 2016 (BST)
* I didn't go to EMF2014 so have no reference point - but I've used far better loos at events in the past. The toilets could be smelled from the food area by Sunday which wasn't pleasant. Can I suggest event loos similar to the shower trailers? They are significantly more civilised! Edit: Something like these: http://www.andyloos.co.uk/product/abberley-premium-trailer/ ThePhilStrongProject (talk) 23:41, 9 August 2016 (BST)
* I did not mind the 'compost loo' aspect as much as some others I've heard from, and I did not think they were smelly, in fact I was surprised they weren't smellier. But I would have felt better with a little more visual privacy: the doors did not close well and were a little too low at the top and too high at the bottom. A privacy screen would have been neat (and could have a double function as a bulletin board / place for posters). Also the material is too rough to clean well. The thing with the dirt/soil worked well but needed clearer instructions (it took me a while to find them). Also better/sturdier scoops. Moem (talk) 08:10, 10 August 2016 (BST)
* More handwash and sturdier scoops - the wash/scoops were depleted/broken at the loos near the gate by Sunday afternoon :( Maybe put the loos near a water point?
* Some improvements I can suggest:
** For the shitholes: Have glass doors next time, so you know what others are able to see from you
** For the shitholes: Implement the africa upgrade: "running water"
** For the shitholes: Have a gravity based systems that puts dirt or even water on the stuff
** For the shitholes: Put some heating under the containers so we know earlier how they smell when the sun shines
** For the shitholes: Use brown coloured board so you can see that they are filty
** For the urinals: use a smaller drain so people will aim better
** For the urinals: Use bigger spiked boards so the urine gets distributed better for disinfection purposes
** For the urinals: Build a bridge over the automatic-bucket-emptier solution that got implemented (work title: overflow-bridge)
** For the urinals: Make the fences like a flag so that people will have a better game experience
** Please post the results of the long term "does any of the attendees have a norovirus"-test
: BugBlue (talk) 11:32, 10 August 2016 (BST)
* Foul please make them better next time. EMF was amazing but this did spoil it a bit I dreaded using them and spent most of the time bursting and uncomfortable. Not enough privacy, the public scooping thing was embarassing and the dark colours gave no indication of whether or not they were clean. I've attended other events where the toilets were similar to the showers at EMF and it made the world of difference.
* Handwash facilities - running water and soap! df
* Toilets will always be a sore point. They were a whole lot better than I've seen at other festivals though, so good job there. But, I really do like running water. I came across this company at another festival, they sell tickets (extra cost, but those of us that want it really don't mind) and are totally worth it (particularly at other festivals without electricity, the hair dryers come in real handy for drying soaked clothing). Not sure if you'd have enough numbers, but perhaps something to consider; http://www.portabletoiletslimited.com/festivals/seat-luxury/ chebe
* Given that the toilets had to service a nominal 1400 people, I think they were very well managed. You can't go to a camp out and expect hotel-quality toilets. I also don't understand why people are complaining about privacy (other that some of the doors didn't bolt properly). Only feet could be seen below the doors, and only your head above (and then only when standing). They did get a bit ripe, but concentrate 3 days worth of faeces and excrement from 1400 people in just two locations and you can expect no less. The only alternative is to have lorries trundling on and off site to empty them every 12 hours. The lashed-up splashback urinals left bit to be desired, particularly when the trough in the south (which were way too narrow for the job) dropped out of its support at one end and wasn't draining efficiently. The absence of hand-washing facilities was nuisance though. Hand steriliser is all well and good, but far from ideal. -- Raj <small>(talk||contribs)</small> 01:04, 11 August 2016 (BST)
* Film festival was great. Sthen (talk) 17:12, 9 August 2016 (BST)
* Electric vehicle power is becoming an issue, when working at the entrance we didn't really have an option other than escorting them onto the camper van section of site in reach of a dk so they'd have enough power to leave. Sthen (talk) 17:12, 9 August 2016 (BST)
**didn't the map show an electric vehicle section of the parking field ? I assumed that would have power, though it apparently didn't
** The guys at the gate kindly allowed me to park by my tent to charge mine on Sunday - my car can charge as low as 6A though, which would place less stress on the power distribution system than something like a Tesla!
* I think everything that was a guest-visible problem at 2014 was addressed. No issue at 2016 seemed anything worse than minor (the worst thing was probably the...err...boundary-pushing music policy at camp holland), and nothing that detracted from it being a great thing overall. 12/10 would EMF again. * I think 3 hours was too long for volunteer shifts. I appreciate that staff were working far longer hours and that some types of volunteering would be awkward if changed too frequently. But others would not, and I think would be more popular if such a large slice wasn't to be taken out of the very busy talk schedule. I was keen to volunteer, and I did - but it was really hard to choose when, especially as the talk schedule was fluid and the villages hadn't yet published.
** The shift length and timing is an issue that we'd really like to work on for next time. The trouble is finding the balance that means there are sufficient numbers of volunteers to cover positions but also that we're not causing volunteers to compromise on the talks they want to see. Some roles also require training, which takes a not insignificant amount of time. We have some ideas though, so hopefully we can improve on this. --Lynz
* What was the rationale for the gate arrangement ? camping vehicles entering at the top of the site seemed very reasonable, but once the majority of traffic was pedestrian it seemed an annoyance. Could there have been a pedestrian gate optimised for pedestrians ?
* I didn’t know about the “no-noise-after-midnight” policy, and it would have been good to know (such factors influence the decision to camp on site or stay at a hotel, at least for me). Put it on the website in case it applies next time. --SECuRE (talk) 06:56, 10 August 2016 (BST)
* I enjoyed volunteering and will do it again. One suggestion - for the last shift in a stage, let speaker ops/someone know what to do about kit (or have an end-of-day checklist/info sheet for each stage). We stayed around for over half an hour waiting for someone to tell us we could just leave the kit there - seemed like a lot of expensive gear inc laptops so I didn't want to just leave it & main person to ask was AWOL & vol desk didn't know the answer! :) (and after a long shift we were hungry!! :) Liedra (talk) 09:27, 10 August 2016 (BST)
* Really loved the purple scheme. Can you keep it? :p chebe
* There was no scope for any fieldcraft - a camping zone where trees are available to pitch bashas and hammocks, and where (leave no trace) open fires are allowed would have added to the experience. It's a different, but not incompatible, interest set, and could add another facet to the event. (Which is not to say I didn't thoroughly enjoy the event just as it was, and have nothing but respect and admiration for everyone who ran it.) -- Raj <small>(talk||contribs)</small> 00:42, 11 August 2016 (BST)

* The food was of very good quality, but occasionally it was a bit too fancy - e.g. on Friday lunchtime I had a very tasty meal which had very little protein or carbohydrate in it, which isn't ideal for someone doing manual labour. * Pity about the shop, it would have been super-useful. Sthen (talk) 17:12, 9 August 2016 (BST)
* I did find it hard to buy small cheap snacks. Pretty much everything was 5+. Not overpriced - just more than needed some of the time. Could have done with bags of crisps etc.
** There was an exhaustive list at bar.emfcamp.org but we didn't advertise its existence enough. --Sde (talk)
* Not able to get cashback because of "Not Authorised" response. Seemed to be a known issue for some card providers, such as Halifax and Lloyds. Might have helped if the problem was advertised sooner. --dcarley (talk)
** We didn't know there was a problem until enough Lloyds cashback transactions had been declined for us to be able to see a pattern. We still don't know why this was happening, and I doubt we ever will. We'll feed the issue back to this year's card machine provider but there's no guarantee they'll be able to do anything about it, and we don't know yet whether we'll be using them again next time.

==General==

Who are you?
EMF is a non-profit event run entirely by a group of dedicated volunteers. EMF 2016 is the third major festival we've held in the UK, and a lot of us also help run other festivals in Germany and the Netherlands.

Can I help out?
EMF is organised entirely by volunteers. The event's success relies on attendees helping out to the extent they are willing.

More information on helping out during the event will appear on the Volunteering page in due course. If you are able to help plan and work before the event, check out the Teams page to see which teams need help.

How accessible is EMF?
We take accessibility very seriously, and we want to let as many people experience the fun of EMF. However, it is ultimately an event in the field, and we can't work miracles with our limited budget.

The site will be well-lit during the event, and we will aim to cover access to the stages with trackway. Travelling between stages may take some time. There will be accessible toilets and the current plan includes an accessible shower with a wheelchair ramp. We cannot guarantee 24/7 power, so it must not be relied on for medical needs, but the power infrastructure team will be on call through the night.

If you will be attending with a carer, they are entitled to a free ticket. Please [mailto:tickets@emfcamp.org email us] in advance so we can allocate the ticket. Registered assistance dogs will be allowed.

If you have any other accessibility concerns, please [mailto:tickets@emfcamp.org drop us an email].

Is EMF family-friendly?
Yes! We want to make EMF a great event for hackers of all ages.

In 2014 we had a full, licensed, free childcare service which was exceedingly well-received. We're aiming to provide this again for 2016, subject to sponsorship being secured (childcare is expensive!). There will be a designated family camping area, and a whole track of events and workshops for children.

EMF has a comprehensive lost-child policy with DBS-checked staff available to help out.

There are a number of things to bear in mind:
* Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
* There will be dangerous things on site, but they will be clearly marked.
* Licensed alcohol sales are only for people of age 18 and over. Bar staff will ask for ID.

Ticket Sales
The event is now completely sold out

What does the ticket price include?
The ticket price includes admission to the event, admission to all of the talks, and most of the workshops. Some workshop organisers charge a fee in order to cover material costs, and places on most workshops will be limited.

Your ticket also includes:
* Tent pitch
* Water
* Showers & Toilets
* Fast internet
* Electricity

Can I bring a caravan/camper van?
Yes, we will have a dedicated camper van area on site, within the main fence, with 16A power provided. You'll need to buy an additional camper van ticket.

As we restrict vehicle movements on site for safety, you may not be able to enter or leave in a vehicle during the public opening of the event. Plan to arrive early and leave late.

We unfortunately can't provide water hookups or drainage/emptying facilities. You will not be able to empty your tank during the event.

Do volunteers get a free ticket?
Everyone who attends is expected to buy a ticket, including the founders and the core organisation team. So many people contribute to running EMF that it would be financially impossible to give everyone who helps out a free ticket, and unfair to draw a line past which volunteers receive free tickets.

The sole exception to this rule are first aiders, who must be trained to the high standards of our first aid team, and are expected to carry out three eight-hour shifts in return for a free ticket.

The transaction reference you've provided isn't accepted by my bank!
If you are having trouble entering the transaction reference into your online banking, just remove the hyphen. Some banks don't like it and don't tell you why.

Can I still buy a parking ticket?
Yes, they are available here. But why not consider lift sharing first?

Planning your Attendance
Where is it? How can I get there?
The EMF 2016 site is Loseley Park, located just south of Guildford, Surrey.

By car, the site is two minutes from the junction of the A3 & A31. Look for the EMF sign as you approach the site; if you take the exit to Loseley Park you will have to turn around as there is no way through to the event area.

By train, we are close to Guildford, Farncombe, and Godalming stations on the Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour line. We will be running a shuttle bus service from one of these stations.

For international visitors, the site is 30-50 minutes by road from both Heathrow (LHR) and Gatwick (LGW) airports, or alternatively 90 minutes drive from the Eurotunnel terminal.

Also see Travel for more details

When can I arrive? When do I have to leave by?
The site will open to ticket holders on Friday morning. All ticket holders must leave the site by noon (12pm) on Monday. Talks and workshops won't start until after 1pm on the Friday so there's plenty of time to arrive.

We will be there before and afterwards setting up and packing up. If you want to help with this, please let us know (by emailing [mailto:volunteers@emfcamp.org volunteers@emfcamp.org]) and we'll let you know when you can turn up. If we have not confirmed that we're expecting you before or after the event you will not be admitted to the site. Anyone arriving before Friday morning or staying beyond Monday afternoon will be expected to help with set-up and tear-down (both of which are mostly manual labour).

When do things kick off?
The talks and workshops will begin after lunch on Friday, although people will be setting up earlier in the day.

Talks and workshops run daily through to the evening, although we expect villages will be doing things late into the night!

Will there be food?
We're planning to improve again on the food situation, with multiple food stalls, catering to all needs.

Will there be a bar?
Yes, we'll be running a volunteer-staffed licensed bar selling beer and wine, as well as soft drinks and the hacker energy drink Club Mate. Far from the usual crap festival beer, we will be serving real ale from local breweries with all profits going towards making the next iteration of Electromagnetic Field more awesome.

The bar on-site opening hours are subject to licensing which will be finalised soon.

By the camping areas there will also be push taps of drinking water available for free.

Can I bring pets?
Sorry, animals (except registered assistance animals) are not allowed.

Can I smoke?
Smoking (including vaping) is not allowed in any of the event tents or in the food/bar area. This includes open-sided stretch tent near the catering area. Elsewhere, please be considerate and very careful to extinguish your cigarettes to avoid setting the dry grass on fire. Please make sure cigarette butts are disposed of in rubbish bins rather than just thrown on the ground as the site is used by livestock at other times of the year, and it's a pain for the clean up crew to pick them up after the camp is over!

Can I bring X/Y/Z?
tl;dr Probably

Please let us know if it's going to be large/tall/use a lot of power/be noisy or anything else you think we should know. We don't plan on stopping people bringing the latest cool laser helmet for shark 3d printer arduino powered UAV thing, but we need to plan for it.

Things requiring special permission and may not be allowed: balloons, sky lanterns and the like.

Can I play lots of loud music?
Sure, but we have a curfew for amplified music. For Friday and Saturday its 11.30pm and for the Sunday its 10.30pm

Can I bring/fly my drone?
Yes - lots of attendees will be bringing drones and there will be a dedicated UAV flying field. It is against UK law to fly drones over the campsite unless you hold permission from the UK Civil Aviation Authority. EMF will be enforcing this rule, and for safety we will not allow UAVs to be flown over the site without prior arrangement.

What if I don't like camping?
Whilst we'd strongly recommend camping (so much happens late into the evening and it's a lot more fun) we realise not everyone wants to. There are several B&Bs in Farncombe which is a short drive or less than an hour's walk away. There is also list of local hotels and bed and breakfast accomodation on Loseley park's site: http://www.loseleypark.co.uk/information/#local-accommodation. Bear in mind that the weekend is a popular time for weddings so local accommodation may sell out quickly.

What are villages?
Villages are areas of the campsite self-organised by attendees. The idea is that like-minded people get together, set up in an area of the campsite and enjoy each other's company. Villages are often set up around a topic or existing group (e.g. lock-picking or a hackspace). Some of them will run their own events parallel to the main schedule (for example last year one village hosted a weekend-long LAN party whilst another ran workshops on ring-making).

If you want to find out more, or see which villages are already proposed see the villages page

You don't need to join a village to attend.

<blockquote>Hebocon is a robot sumo-wrestling competition for those who are not technically gifted. It is a competition where crappy robots that can just barely move gather and somehow manage to engage in odd, awkward battles. To my knowledge, this is the only robot contest in the world where people with no technical capabilities to make robots are presented prizes.</blockquote>
Get involved
Everyone is invited to compete with a self-made robot, especially if you've never done it before. High-tech is penalized, creativity encouraged. Build a robot before the event - the event will just be the battles and may some short introductions. Building a robot doesn't need to take long though - you can probably make an entry in an hour from things found on camp. You can decide to enter right up until the start of the event, but if you can, let us know if you're thinking of entering so we can guess the number of entrants.

# Watch the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46ivFpsmEVQ
# Don't bring anything heavy or powerful enough that it could injure someone. If your robot could hurt someone by dropping it on their foot, it's too heavy. Official Hebocon rules recommend a 1kg weight limit.
# Battles will take place on a 1m x 0.5m table, or as close as we can get to that with the tables we have available. To win a battle, you can push your opponent off the table, or tip them over. Fights will last for one minute. If the robots don't touch during the fight, the fight will be restarted; on the third restart, the first to leave the table or tip over will be the loser.
# Trailing power wires are allowed. Control by trailing wires is also allowed. Radio control is acceptable, but you will probably be given a high-tech penalty if you make your own radio control system. Re-purposing an existing radio control system like a radio controlled car would be better.
# Physical remote control, such as pushing your robot with sticks once it's in the arena, or pulling on power wires, is not in the spirit of the competition. Rolling your robot down a ramp into the arena is OK.
# Don't spend so much time or effort on your robot that you would mind if it got destroyed. If you are beaten, it would be great if you can let your opponent glue a part of your robot to theirs to carry on your robot's spirit.

General

How can I get a ticket?
Tickets will only be available from our web site starting on Monday December 14th at 20:00. There will be no day tickets and no tickets being sold at the gate.

How much does it cost?
Adult tickets are currently £120. The price will rise closer to the event. Buy early to get the best price!

There are tickets available at a lower price for under-16s accompanied by an adult. Children under 5 can attend for free but still require a ticket for planning purposes. If you have a camper van or similar, you will need a camper van ticket as well, and if you want to bring a car you'll also need a car parking ticket.

If you want to support our non-profit event, you can buy a supporter ticket at a higher price. This will help us make the EMF site even more awesome.

How can I pay?
We accept three payment methods:

* Direct bank transfer.
* One-time direct debit via GoCardless.
* Credit or debit card via Stripe (for an additional fee).

With all of these methods, you can pay in Pounds Sterling or Euros.

What does the ticket price include?
The ticket price includes admission to the event, admission to all of the talks, and most of the workshops. Some workshop organisers charge a fee in order to cover material costs, and places on most workshops will be limited.

Your ticket also includes:
* Tent pitch
* Water
* Showers & Toilets
* Fast internet
* Electricity

Can I get a family ticket?
Unfortunately, as every attendee including children counts towards our capacity limit, we are unable to offer family or group tickets. We have however already discounted the child ticket prices by 55% which is as far as our budget allows.

Can I buy a day ticket?
Short answer: no.

Regardless of whether you camp with us or stay somewhere off-site you will still need to buy a full ticket. Some day tickets will be available to people who have talks or workshops accepted via the Call for Participation but these will not be generally available.

Most of the cost of the tickets doesn't go on provisions for camping, in fact our largest expense are all the marquees for stages. Additionally day tickets are difficult to manage (in terms of making sure people leave on time etc.) and we feel that staying for a single day really misses out on the best bits of the event that often occur around the organised portions of the event.

Can I pay more? TAKE MY MONEY!
If you can afford it and wish to help support the event financially by paying a bit more for your ticket, you can buy a Supporter ticket. We're a non-profit event and so the money will go towards making the event even more awesome.

Smoking is not allowed in any of the event tents or in the food/bar area.

General

* Direct bank transfer.

* Tent pitch
* Water
* Showers & Toilets
* Fast internet
* Electricity

Can I pay more? TAKE MY MONEY!
If you can afford it and wish to help support the event financially by paying a bit more for your ticket, you can buy a Supporter ticket. We're a non-profit event and so the money will go towards making the event even more awesome.

All ticket holders must leave the site by Monday afternoon. Talks and workshops won't start until after 1pm on the Friday so there's plenty of time to arrive.

We will be there before and afterwards setting up and packing up. If you want to help with this, please let us know and we'll let you know when you can turn up. If we have not confirmed that we're expecting you before or after the event you will not be admitted to the site. Anyone arriving before Friday morning or staying beyond Monday afternoon will be expected to help with set-up and tear-down.

Smoking is not allowed in any of the event tents or in the food/bar area.

* Water
* Showers & Toilets
* Fast internet
* Electricity

Can I get a family ticket?
Unfortunately, as every attendee including children counts towards our capacity limit, we are unable to offer family or group tickets. We have however already discounted the child ticket prices by 55% which is as far as our budget allows.

Can I pay more? TAKE MY MONEY!
If you can afford it and wish to help support the event financially by paying a bit more for your ticket, you can buy a Supporter ticket. We're a non-profit event and so the money will go towards making the event even more awesome.

All ticket holders must leave the site by Monday afternoon.

Smoking is not allowed in any of the event tents or in the food/bar area.

Can I buy a day ticket?
Whilst we'd strongly recommend camping (so much happens late into the evening and it's a lot more fun) we realise not everyone wants to. There are several B&Bs in Farncombe which is a short drive or less than an hour's walk away. There is also list of local hotels and bed and breakfast accomodation on Loseley park's site: http://www.loseleypark.co.uk/information/#local-accommodation. Bear in mind that the weekend is a popular time for weddings so local accommodation may sell out quickly.

Regardless of whether you camp with us or stay somewhere off-site you will still need to buy a full ticket. Most of the cost of the tickets doesn't go on provisions for camping, in fact our largest expense are all the marquees for stages.
