* If you took part in the Meditation for Hackers workshop, please post feedback here.

* Please make sure that next time there are video up/downscalers available for speaker/presenter hookups. I had to skip parts of my talk because the video team only supported a single resolution through HDMI. My laptop could output 50 different resolutions, but not the required specific one. Luckily a volunteer offered her laptop to move the talk to , but all the simulation stuff that was part of the talk could not be reinstalled at a strangers laptop at a moments notice. I routinely present at conferences all over the world and the only place I ever had video hookup issues was at EMF ;) User:Gori

* The slide-capture (or USB camera capture) interface lagged somewhere between 1 and 12 seconds. That screwed up some stuff. However some of the videomixer volunteers offset this with great skill and made it un-noticeable. Thanks. BugBlue (talk) 11:36, 10 August 2016 (BST)

* Consider adding a prominent marker to the listings of talks that won't be recorded. I (& at least a few others) like to prioritise in-person stuff at EMF like visiting villages, workshops, meeting old friends, etc and plan to watch talks on youtube later. It'd be nice to see at a glance which scheduled talks can only be seen in person. (Occasional failures to get good recordings are a given, of course. But a note of when presenters have requested in advance that their talk not be recorded would be good). Bugs (talk) 15:28, 11 August 2016 (BST)

* As this section is "Feedback" not "Criticism": IMO, the content (talks, workshops, installations, etc) was excellent and the execution remarkably smooth for a big, volunteer-run event. **Seconded. A few people in our hackspace were wondering before the event if the badges/specs/libraries would be available early, to work on apps in advance of EMF. * Pity about the shop, it would have been super-useful. The one at beautiful days is done by http://www.talatonparishcouncil.co.uk/Core/Talaton-TC/Pages/Village_Shop_1.aspx and presumably will have been a good fund-raiser for them, I'm not sure how common this type of operation is around the country, but there might be a similar operation near some sites, might be worth looking into. --sthen
** We didn't know there was a problem until enough Lloyds cashback transactions had been declined for us to be able to see a pattern. We still don't know why this was happening, and I doubt we ever will. We'll feed the issue back to this year's card machine provider but there's no guarantee they'll be able to do anything about it, and we don't know yet whether we'll be using them again next time. *The showers were capable of hot, high flow operation. I had a superb one on monday morning. But when all were in use (queue at breakfast time) they sometimes fell to a drizzle. Possibly a supply pressure issue rather than the showers themselves.
*I found that both times I used them I had barely a trickle of water to wash with. It was a good temperature but no pressure. Liked the booths. --Pinski1 (talk) 07:33, 10 August 2016 (BST)
* By far the best showers I've ever come across at a festival. Keep it up :) chebe
* I don't recall seeing an accessible shower at EMF - if that happens again in the future, would it be possible to provide a plastic chair in 1-2 shower cubicles so that a standard cubicle becomes more accessible to those of us who are just unstable on our legs?

Toilets
* These were significantly better than chemical portaloos. Urinals were not great though; lots of splashback and leaks; quite a puddle in the entrance of the ones on the NE towards the end. Could have done with better lighting and the grid steps weren't ideal. (The best event toilets I've used were at shambala and done by thunderboxes2go - wooden stalls with leds and flowers and very attentive to cleaning, straw bale urinals, no wheely bin management as they use big sealable tanks instead - they also have accessible compost loos). --sthen
** Seconded regarding the urinal construction, and the lighting at the northern toilets was not great - I had to raise this with staff on Friday as there was none at all Thursday night.
* I didn't go to EMF2014 so have no reference point - but I've used far better loos at events in the past. The toilets could be smelled from the food area by Sunday which wasn't pleasant. Can I suggest event loos similar to the shower trailers? They are significantly more civilised! Edit: Something like these: http://www.andyloos.co.uk/product/abberley-premium-trailer/ ThePhilStrongProject (talk) 23:41, 9 August 2016 (BST)
* I did not mind the 'compost loo' aspect as much as some others I've heard from, and I did not think they were smelly, in fact I was surprised they weren't smellier. But I would have felt better with a little more visual privacy: the doors did not close well and were a little too low at the top and too high at the bottom. A privacy screen would have been neat (and could have a double function as a bulletin board / place for posters). Also the material is too rough to clean well. The thing with the dirt/soil worked well but needed clearer instructions (it took me a while to find them). Also better/sturdier scoops. Moem (talk) 08:10, 10 August 2016 (BST)
* More handwash and sturdier scoops - the wash/scoops were depleted/broken at the loos near the gate by Sunday afternoon :( Maybe put the loos near a water point?
* Some improvements I can suggest:
** For the shitholes: Have glass doors next time, so you know what others are able to see from you
** For the shitholes: Implement the africa upgrade: "running water"
** For the shitholes: Have a gravity based systems that puts dirt or even water on the stuff
** For the shitholes: Put some heating under the containers so we know earlier how they smell when the sun shines
** For the shitholes: Use brown coloured board so you can see that they are filty
** For the urinals: use a smaller drain so people will aim better
** For the urinals: Use bigger spiked boards so the urine gets distributed better for disinfection purposes
** For the urinals: Build a bridge over the automatic-bucket-emptier solution that got implemented (work title: overflow-bridge)
** For the urinals: Make the fences like a flag so that people will have a better game experience
** Please post the results of the long term "does any of the attendees have a norovirus"-test
* Foul please make them better next time. EMF was amazing but this did spoil it a bit I dreaded using them and spent most of the time bursting and uncomfortable. Not enough privacy, the public scooping thing was embarassing and the dark colours gave no indication of whether or not they were clean. I've attended other events where the toilets were similar to the showers at EMF and it made the world of difference.
* Handwash facilities - running water and soap! df
** This existed at the south toilets and at least one other water point but it would have been nice to have them at the north toilets too
* Toilets will always be a sore point. They were a whole lot better than I've seen at other festivals though, so good job there. But, I really do like running water. I came across this company at another festival, they sell tickets (extra cost, but those of us that want it really don't mind) and are totally worth it (particularly at other festivals without electricity, the hair dryers come in real handy for drying soaked clothing). Not sure if you'd have enough numbers, but perhaps something to consider; http://www.portabletoiletslimited.com/festivals/seat-luxury/ chebe
* Given that the toilets had to service a nominal 1400 people, I think they were very well managed. You can't go to a camp out and expect hotel-quality toilets. I also don't understand why people are complaining about privacy (other that some of the doors didn't bolt properly). Only feet could be seen below the doors, and only your head above (and then only when standing). They did get a bit ripe, but concentrate 3 days worth of faeces and excrement from 1400 people in just two locations and you can expect no less. The only alternative is to have lorries trundling on and off site to empty them every 12 hours. The lashed-up splashback urinals left bit to be desired, particularly when the trough in the south (which were way too narrow for the job) dropped out of its support at one end and wasn't draining efficiently. The absence of hand-washing facilities was nuisance though. Hand steriliser is all well and good, but far from ideal. -- Raj <small>(talk||contribs)</small> 01:04, 11 August 2016 (BST)
* ++ for the composting loos here. So much better than a chemical loo. And almost never a queue - I think you'd need an awful lot of shower-quality loos to avoid that, and somehow they get dirtier, probably because most loos don't cope with spillage as well as the composting toilets did. Yes, I did find them a bit smelly towards the end, when the wind was wrong. Not great having them next to the food. The urinals had some faults but nothing stopped you using the composters instead.
* Please could the accessible toilets be marked clearly as such at the start of EMF, rather than a day in? Would also have been useful to have a bin in these toilets for nappies, pads etc.
**Thanks for volunteering, glad you enjoyed it! --Lynz
* I think 3 hours was too long for volunteer shifts. I appreciate that staff were working far longer hours and that some types of volunteering would be awkward if changed too frequently. But others would not, and I think would be more popular if such a large slice wasn't to be taken out of the very busy talk schedule. I was keen to volunteer, and I did - but it was really hard to choose when, especially as the talk schedule was fluid and the villages hadn't yet published.
** The shift length and timing is an issue that we'd really like to work on for next time. The trouble is finding the balance that means there are sufficient numbers of volunteers to cover positions but also that we're not causing volunteers to compromise on the talks they want to see. Some roles also require training, which takes a not insignificant amount of time. We have some ideas though, so hopefully we can improve on this. --Lynz
** I agree to an extent, so I tended to do more shorter VOC shifts. Perhaps a list of adhoc jobs could be maintained too? e.g. emptying bins, moving equipment, seeing in lorries etc. DomCleal
**: I like the idea of a list of ad-hoc jobs but these are often things which need doing "now" so a posted list would be tricky.
** 3 hours seemed quite a good compromise to me - it's shorter than shifts at many festivals, and having it shorter (i.e. more people needed to cover the same time) means more risk of people not turning up or turning up late and more time taken up showing people the ropes during handover. --sthen
* I enjoyed volunteering and will do it again. One suggestion - for the last shift in a stage, let speaker ops/someone know what to do about kit (or have an end-of-day checklist/info sheet for each stage). We stayed around for over half an hour waiting for someone to tell us we could just leave the kit there - seemed like a lot of expensive gear inc laptops so I didn't want to just leave it & main person to ask was AWOL & vol desk didn't know the answer! :) (and after a long shift we were hungry!! :) Liedra (talk) 09:27, 10 August 2016 (BST)
**didn't the map show an electric vehicle section of the parking field ? I assumed that would have power, though it apparently didn't
** The guys at the gate kindly allowed me to park by my tent to charge mine on Sunday - my car can charge as low as 6A though, which would place less stress on the power distribution system than something like a Tesla!
* I think everything that was a guest-visible problem at 2014 was addressed. No issue at 2016 seemed anything worse than minor (the worst thing was probably the...err...boundary-pushing music policy at camp holland), and nothing that detracted from it being a great thing overall. 12/10 would EMF again. --sthen
* Some more "lanes" in camping areas - in some places it was very difficult to navigate between tents. markp (markp) 08:57, 10 August 2016 (BST)
* Really loved the purple scheme. Can you keep it? :p chebe
* There was no scope for any fieldcraft - a camping zone where trees are available to pitch bashas and hammocks, and where (leave no trace) open fires are allowed would have added to the experience. It's a different, but not incompatible, interest set, and could add another facet to the event. (Which is not to say I didn't thoroughly enjoy the event just as it was, and have nothing but respect and admiration for everyone who ran it.) -- Raj <small>(talk||contribs)</small> 00:42, 11 August 2016 (BST)
* Needed different colour bins and labelled stands at all trash areas so we can actually do recycling. Davidc (talk) 11:40, 11 August 2016 (BST)
* Needed scissors for the entrance tent, for shortening tails on the wristbands on children, and to allow removing wristbands if the crimper jams.
* It was really useful to have some accessible parking near the main gate. Although not all the stewards knew about it, and when I turned up it was full, in part of people who had parked there in order to unload. Which makes the parking less useful if you turn up as a disabled driver and need to park! Could collect car registrations of people needing accessible parking when they buy the ticket and insist that a blue disabled parking badge be left on the dashboard? But thank you for providing the parking in principle.

Simon:

<div style="float:right;padding-left:10px">__TOC__</div>

Team:NOC has tried to build and support the fastest network for you: a network comparable to a medium sized ISP, built up in just a couple of days. It might not be perfect all the time. We will be providing blanket wireless coverage and wired network access to both venues and camping tents.

Key points
* To use the camp WiFi on most modern devices, connect to the emfcamp network with a username of emf and a password of emf.
* You have a public IP address and there is no network firewall or filtering. Keep safe!
* Don't set up your own wireless access point. This is a serious problem in such a dense event and here's why.

Rules
* Be nice and friendly! Do not do to others what you do not wish done to yourself.
* Protect your computer! We cannot be taken responsible or held accountable for any damage your devices might sustain due to security problems, power spikes and other such perils.
* Do not operate your own WiFi access point. This causes a major slow-down for everybody else. Here's why: Access Points.
* If you are operating anything else in the 2.4GHz spectrum, please clear the frequencies in advance with us.
* Do not attempt to run a DHCP or RA server. You will be found and named and shamed!
* Cabling from your tent to the Datenklo must not cross any roads or fire lanes (this is to electrically protect our network hardware, as well as to reduce trip hazards).
* If you are connecting a Nanode / Arduino Ethernet / other microcontroller to the network please make sure it is using a unique MAC address. Many of the code examples for such devices use an identical MAC address and this will cause problems - if you aren't sure contact us.
* If you are connecting a switch, you need to contact the NOC if you are connecting more than 10 stations. You are only allowed one uplink from your switch to our network - do not attempt to connect multiple cables or to multiple DKs!

If you break these rules, we will track you down or triangulate you, but we'd rather spend the time maintaining the smooth operation of the network, so please don't waste our time. And if you think Team:NOC cannot locate you just because you're wireless - think again. ;-)

Uplink
The camp site will have a 1 Gbps uplink to our router in London Docklands.

Wireless
The whole field has been covered with many wireless access points to ensure the best possible coverage and to allow you to roam seamlessly without interruption. Naturally, there is additional coverage in popular areas such as the talk tents. The following wireless networks will be available:

; emfcamp
: This is 5GHz and should you should use this one in preference, if you can see it. The username and password are "emf". This is the most secure, WPA2-Enterprise.
; emfcamp-legacy
: This is 2.4GHz and less resistant to interference, use it only if you have to. The username and password are "emf". This is also WPA2-Enterprise.
; emfcamp-insecure
: Warning: insecure This is both 5GHz and 2.4GHz, and is for older devices that don't support WPA2-Enterprise. It's unencrypted, and people will likely intercept your traffic.
; spacenet
: This is 2.4GHz + 5GHz and WPA2-Enterprise, you can connect with a valid account if your hackerspace offers spacenet.
; eduroam
: This is 2.4GHz + 5GHz and WPA2-Enterprise, you can connect with a valid account if your university/college/school is offering eduroam. More information can be found at eduroam.org.

Use of the 5GHz SSIDs is recommended if your device supports them. 802.11b is disabled as it slows everyone else down.

Even if you are using an encrypted network, you should still encrypt any sensitive traffic sent over the air end-to-end to prevent snooping. Although some SSIDs offer encryption, it is only over-the-air.

We have airtime fairness configured on our wireless controllers, so if you wish to download large files please use a wired connection (there will be plenty about).

For proper wireless support under linux, you should have a kernel newer than 2.6.39.2. There is also a kernel panic with brcmsmac on linux 3.10.3 that can be fixed by downgrading to kernel 3.10.2.

WPA2 802.1X, encryption
Due to popular demand (and with security in mind) we provide WPA2 802.1X. This will encrypt your traffic, preventing attackers from sniffing your data. Keep in mind that this won't protect you from other network attacks and you should still be aware that you are at a hacker conference! Your link layer should be secure if you do certificate checking (see below).

You might think: "WTF!? Do I need to register a user and password blah, blah". Fortunately not. You can use any username/password combination using EAP-TTLS with PAP to login (example: "user: fbhfbhiaf pass: bgufwbnkqo" is valid), because we don't care who logs in and who you are. We just want to encrypt your data.

Users which use MSCHAPv2 (like Windows users with default 802.1X supplicant) should use a fixed username and password. You can use "emf/emf" or "guest/guest" as "username/password".

Client Settings
Also see client settings for a list of OS-specific client settings.

SSID: emfcamp or emfcamp-legacy

EAP-TTLS:

Phase 1: EAP-TTLS
Phase 2: PAP

PEAP:

Phase 1: PEAP
Phase 2: MSCHAPv2 or EAP-MSCHAPv2 or PAP

CN = radius.emf.camp
CA = StartCom Certification Authority
SHA1 Fingerprint = 6D:07:65:43:98:62:BB:86:95:43:0D:2D:34:02:14:A4:47:EA:E1:A4

Make sure you check the certificate in order to know you are connecting to the correct network (you should check on both the CN and the CA). Check here for the complete certificate.

Services / VLANs
Different services / VLANs are offered on the wireless network. On the emfcamp or emfcamp-legacy SSID you will be dropped into the correct VLAN using WPA2 802.1X. Use the following username/password combinations:

* internetofstuff/internetofstuff (for the "Internet of Stuff" VLAN; for projects that should not be reachable from the internet, but only from the camp network. Does offer outbound internet connectivity, not inbound.)
* emf/emf or emfcamp/emfcamp or guest/guest (for regular user VLAN)

Please note the username AND password are case-sensitive.

Projects that do not support WPA2 802.1X should use the emfcamp-insecure SSID. Based off the MAC address vendor, projects will dropped into the "Internet of Stuff"-VLAN automatically. If you think your project should or should not be in this VLAN, get in contact with us. The following vendors will be dropped into this VLAN (for MAC address to vendor list see here):

* Texas Instruments
* Espressif Inc.

Camping area and workshops
All camping areas will be within 60m of a Datenklo (Data Toilet), please bring around 60-70m of CAT5 cable. Unless a sponsor comes forward for it, we will be unable to supply cable on site. We will be budgeting only for the infrastructure requirements and necessary spares to deal with issues.

Lay your own cable neatly from your tent back to the nearest Datenklo, and leave 6m of slack coiled on the floor in front of it. And please lay it so that it can be clearly seen that it needs to be plugged in - or you risk having your cable overlooked. At regular intervals a member of the NOC team will connect it up and enable the port.

If you wish to be removed from a Datenklo again, contact the helpdesk directly.

All of our edge ports are at least 100Mbit or 1Gbit, some support PoE (802.3af), plus Auto-MDX.

Note that not all our edge ports will support 10Mbit - if you need it for old or embedded things please bring a switch to convert.

Static IPs
If you need a static IP on the wired network, drop by the Team:InfoDesk.

IPv6
Naturally, IPv6 is available throughout the network and should "just work" for you. Team:NOC does not recommend disabling IPv6 if you have problems, instead try to understand the problem you are experiencing and get educated in the new world order. Contact the NOC helpdesk if you need help.

Multicast
We have a TV & radio multicast feed from the BBC. Simply open your media player and browse multicast streams (e.g. in VLC's main window, go to the sidebar "Local Network -> Network Streams (SAP)").

This is currently working on both the wired and wireless network; you will have some expected packet loss if you use wireless though.

Don't forget to turn on deinterlacing to get a proper picture (press 'd' in VLC).

Services
* DNS: 78.158.87.11 and 78.158.87.12
* NTP: 78.158.87.11 and 78.158.87.12 (ntp1.emf.camp and ntp2.emf.camp)
* Nearest Debian mirror: http://debian.mirror.uk.sargasso.net
* Content distribution server - for use by speakers to upload their content to an on-site server - http://content.emf.camp/ . Speakers please contact noc@ to get an account.

Security
Recent vulnerabilities
WARNING: Bring a recent DHCP Client. If your OS uses ISC DHCP dhclient make sure you don't run a vulnerable version. https://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/410676

Encryption
Please treat the network as wide open and full of attackers. Although Team:NOC themselves will not monitor the network, always assume that Alice flirting with Bob will be spied upon by The Third Party.

Any sensitive information including passwords must therefore be encrypted. Please make sure you don't use any software or web applications that send sensitive data or passwords in the clear.

The following mechanisms should be safe:
* Anything that goes through a VPN
* Any website that uses HTTPS
* Any application that uses SSL
** In the case of email, you need to have SSL enabled for both receiving mail (POP, IMAP) and sending it (SMTP)
* ssh and scp
* Where possible, use One-time passwords. Real tokens work best, many of those should be compatible with open source radius servers. Here is a simple Perl radius server implementation for RFC6238 tokens that works with ssh and other stuff on linux.

The following are almost always unsafe:

* FTP with login/password (are almost always sent in the clear)
* Telnet with login/password
* Email if you don't use SSL
* Webmail that doesn't use HTTPS
** Someone could trigger a password reminder and then intercept your email
* Websites that use HTTP (not HTTPS) where you need to fill in a password in the page itself

Possibly unsafe, make sure that you understand what you're doing:

* Websites where you need to fill in a password and your browser (not the website!) tells you it's going to be sent securely
* Websites that require an account but remember you're logged in
** The password may be protected but not the content or cookies that automatically log you in
* Any time your browser or other application brings up anything to do with a certificate
* Anything not protected with SSL: someone could be faking DNS answers to impersonate certain sites

Remember: if you're being stupid someone may feel the need to teach you a security lesson in a not so subtle way! (No, that doesn't mean it's ok to hack people just to see if their security is in order.)

Firewall
There is no network firewall. We operate an unfiltered network that is wide open to the Internet. There is no NAT, and everybody has a public IP address. This is our definition of "network neutrality" - a network that doesn't do anything whatsoever to your IP connection.

If you are used to feeling secure just because you've been sitting behind a NAT router, think again. You are now wide open to the whole Internet. Ensure your personal firewall is enabled and set to "Public Network" and that you have applied all security updates to your OS and applications.

FAQ
Can I bring a server?
<strike>Yes, though we would rather these were stored centrally in our NOC. This allows us to provision power easily and you also get the added benefit of connecting directly to our core and having UPS backup. If you intend to bring a server please email noc@emfcamp.org so we can fully understand your requirements prior to the event.</strike>

We have not yet determined whether we will be able to provide colocation space for servers, but we would like to in order to save bandwidth on the extensive site network. If this will be helpful for you, please e-mail noc@emfcamp.org so we can gauge demand.

Is there a server I can use to host data on site?
Yes, content.emf.camp will be available again for speakers and workshops to store data on site, providing faster access to local users. Prior to the event, the server will be online on a fast Internet connection until around July 29th, at which point it will be shipped to site and won't be available again until the site Internet connection is up.

If you would like to use this facility, please e-mail the NOC. If you need anything other than standard HTTP userdir hosting (http://content.emf.camp/~yournick/) let us know as well.

Can I use the 2.4GHz band for non-wifi projects?
The following channels are available for adhoc/mesh/other wireless stuff:

* 2.4Ghz: Channel 1
* 5Ghz: Channel 136, 140

We cannot force you to use these channels, but we are trying to build a functional wireless network for the other attendees too. So please, don't do any experiments on other channels.

Can I bring an access point?
No, this is strictly prohibited! We need all available channels to provide good quality coverage for the rest of the attendees. Please do not be selfish here as you will degrade performance for everyone else, and we WILL track you down.

If you think you can ignore this rule because one little access point can't hurt anyone, think again. This page has the calculations on just how huge a problem it is: Access Points.

If you are operating a village (using an EMF-supplied tent) that has poor coverage, we may be able to arrange to put an access point in it during the event to improve coverage. Stop by the NOC and ask.

Can I bring a switch?
Yes, but for stability purposes all edge ports are limited to 10 MAC addresses at a time. If you want to connect a switch with more stations, you need to stop by Team:InfoDesk and ask us to raise the port-security on your port. If you do this, you need to convince us that you know what you're doing and promise not to do anything that may harm the network - in particular, you must not connect the switch to our network by more than 1 cable (not even to a different DK).

My port goes up and down every couple of minutes
You have probably tripped port security. Most likely scenario is that you have connected more than 10 stations without consulting us (see answer to previous question).
