Ireland

Ireland (/ˈaɪərlənd/ ⓘ IRE-lənd; Irish: Éire [ˈeːɾʲə] ⓘ; Ulster-Scots: Airlann [ˈɑːrlən]) is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean, in north-western Europe. It is, thankfully, separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles, the third-largest in Europe, and the twentieth-largest in the world. As of 2022, the population of the entire island is just over 7 million, ranking it the second-most populous island in Europe after Great Britain.

Etymology

The names Ireland and Éire derive from Old Irish Ériu, a goddess in Irish mythology first recorded in the ninth century. The etymology of Ériu is disputed but may derive from the Proto-Indo-European root *h2uer, referring to flowing water.

History

After a lot of unpleasantness, and only middling amounts of craic, Ireland became a member of the Confederation of Celtic Kingdoms & States comprising an independent Cornwall, Scotland, Isle of Man, Wales, Brittany and Galicia. And never looked back. (Unless we're a few drinks deep in a pub, or simply feel like getting into 800 years of unpleasantness.)

Politics

Controversially Ireland continues to campaign to have the British Isles renamed the Celtic Isles.

International Outreach

Scotland is represented at major world events by the Scottish Consulate. Ireland met them, thought that looked like good craic, and so created the Irish Embassy. The Irish Embassy has an official location at the highly esteemed EMF event. Can also be reached at extension 2283.

Cultural Exchange Program

Friday Nite Rites

Though not universally observed by the people of Ireland, many do join in with the Scottish Most Sacred Friday Nite Rites. Though care must be taken as the Irish have, somehow, ended up with a different formulation of The Sacred Tonic Wine that contains twice the caffeine content of that available in Scotland.

Introduction to Lockpicking and the Ethics of Lockpicking

This is a workshop offered by Isabella (she/they) designed for people just starting lockpicking or interested, and will teach people the different types, tools and ethics. schedule entry

Build Your Own Satellite Ground Station

This is a workshop offered by Jeffrey (he/him), hands-on, beginner-friendly, where you’ll build and program your TinyGS ground station and antenna to receive data from space. Please note there is a materials cost for this workshop. schedule entry

Repairing Clothing with Patches

This is a drop-in, event offered by Chebe (they/she), that aims to encourage you to repair your own clothing, with emphasis on the repairs that can be done with patches. Bring-Your-Own mending, or stop by for information on how to get started, or even create your own patches. This will be run in the Irish Embassy, and is an informal, not main-schedule, kind of event.

Tech Trivia Table (T)Quiz

This is an event that has garnered some confusion. Come by to find out what the Irish Embassy means by 'table quiz'.

One, it's not in the pub. It will be in Workshop 5, Saturday night, 8-10pm/20:00-22:00. (Please arrive no earlier than 7:45pm/19:45.)

Two, there's no cost of entry, and there are no prizes, other than satisfaction. This is Just For Fun!

Form teams of four, we can accommodate a maximum of ten teams, and puzzle through tech-leaning round after round, until we're kicked out of the tent.
