About

The Maths Village is run by a group of mathematicians and maths communicators from all over the UK - including researchers, authors, presenters, YouTubers and hobbyists. This year the Maths Village will be one of EMF's Workshop Villages, hosting workshops from the main programme alongside their own content.

Last EMF, we had a selection of hands-on maths puzzles, free maths magazines, interactive gadgets and games, dome-building workshops, face painting and a MathsJam evening.

If you're a big maths fan already, or want to get into it (or back into it) you're welcome to join us to do some maths, and see what exciting stuff we've come up with this time.

Things We're Already in Progress on Planning

Maths Zine Printer

• Katie is sourcing components and building a zine selection box with buttons
• Scroggs has a receipt printer and can do code for it
• Zine content to be sourced from workshop on 12th April: https://mathszines-emf.eventbrite.co.uk

Kaleidocycle Photo Booth

• Ayliean wants to make a photo booth that takes a photo of you and prints it on a kaleidocycle
• Lisa has a wooden photo booth frame, plus hopefully printer and screen
• 'One day hack' (Scroggs' words) to build the thing (based on something like https://christianp.github.io/hexaflexagon/)
• Finished net should fit 2-up on A4
• Can run a workshop for people to assemble them if people want help

Circle Theorems Badge Workshop

• Katie has a badge maker
• Alison is happy to run a workshop on Circle Theorems
• Alison will also sketch out some designs for badges of the circle theorems, which Katie can prep/print
• People make and take away a badge of their favourite circle theorem at the end
• Katie will need to check stock of badge making bits and bring printouts, colouring in stuff etc
• Satisfying thunk noise/big handle, deeply enjoyable

Things that should be able to happen with a minimum of planning

Maths Busking Workshop

• Teach some people to do some maths busking tricks
• Who can then come back and practice them to people who are queuing for...

Maths Face Painting

• Run it as last time
• Provide entertainment to people waiting in the queue
• Amy is happy to do painting again, will be able to set up 2/3 tables with people painting (could be clever and put two sets of kit out on shared tables in the middle and have 4 painting stations)

MathsCity Dome Kits

• Katie can pick these up in the van on her way down
• Max can run workshops as needed
• Lisa to laser cut and sell tiny versions of the dome kit (yes)

Some kind of Geogebra workshop

• Surely

MathsJam evening

• Run it as a hybrid between a pub jam and gathering: half an hour of lightning talks (could be past MathsJam talks or new ones - maybe invite Luna Kirkby, Ben Ashforth, Adam Townsend Via The Internet, etc to reprise old favourites) followed by general jamming
• Katie can bring MathsJam In A Box and supply some puzzles, old Shouts, cards/dice/pens etc
• Everyone else can bring stuff too

More Speculative Other Ideas

Workshops to use up shit that's in Katie's cupboard

• Till rolls that could be made into hexaflexagons

Maths Village Shop?

• Can Katie bring her books to sell?
• Lisa's probably got other stuff we can sell too
• Could run it for specified times during the weekend so we don't have to leave stuff out
• Could do something stupid like make it be open at literally random times, that we advertise but they're stupid (like for 8 minutes between 3.40pm and 3.48pm)

Amy mentioned mathematical temp tattoos

• Do we sell these in the little shop? Or just give them away?
• Katie's brother-in-law used to have inkjet printable temp tattoo paper - could see if he still has it, or get more
